On the surface, Israel and Saudi Arabia seem like sworn enemies, but behind closed doors they've secretly collaborated for decades. From covert aid during the Yemeni civil war, to joint efforts against Saddam Hussein during the Gulf War, to Saudi Arabia’s tacit support for the Abraham Accords, their “off-the-record” alliance has deep roots.

Despite public hostilities and the recent tensions surrounding the Gaza War, the mutual need to counter the shared threat of Iran keeps bringing them closer. The Israel-Saudi relationship has long been an open secret. The only question is when it will finally become official.

Essential Questions

  1. What kind of mutual interests would two countries need to have in order for diplomatic ties to be successful?
  2. What conditions are necessary to ensure that negotiations between two countries remain productive?

Big Ideas

  1. In order for diplomatic ties to be successful, the parties must have overlapping interests in critical areas.
  2. Negotiating parties must be aware of their priorities and red lines.
