Oskar Schindler was not a perfect person. He joined the Nazi Party largely for personal gain and lived a life focused on business and opportunity rather than moral leadership.

However, when Nazi policies turned toward mass murder, Schindler made a dramatic choice. Using his connections and resources, he bribed officials, falsified documents, and spent his entire fortune to protect more than 1,000 Jewish men and women. His actions show how individuals can change and choose courage, even in the darkest times.

Essential Questions

  1. What risks and sacrifices did Schindler face in order to protect Jewish lives, and how did those risks contrast with his earlier life choices?
  2. How should history recognize complicated figures and what lessons can we learn from examining both their flaws and their good deeds?
  3. What responsibility, if any, do individuals have to resist unjust systems when resistance carries personal risk?

Big Ideas

  1. Historical figures are complex people can act bravely and imperfectly at the same time.
  2. Oskar Schindler’s choices illustrate the extraordinary power of individual action within a system built on cruelty and oppression.
  3. True courage often requires personal sacrifice and the willingness to act without certainty of success.
