Every year, the world sends billions of dollars’ worth of food to hungry people, and yet nearly 700 million people still went hungry last year. Even more surprising, sending free food can sometimes do more harm than good, putting local farmers out of business and making countries more dependent on outside help.

This video explores a different approach. Israeli organizations like Cultivaid and Fair Planet are sharing the farming knowledge Israel gained by turning swamps, rocky hills, and deserts into one of the world’s most advanced agricultural centers. Their goal is not just to grow more food, but to help farming communities in Africa build economies that last.

This guide helps students think critically about what real help looks like, what Israel’s experience can and cannot teach the world, and how the Jewish idea of tzedakah connects to justice.

Big Ideas

  1. Helping effectively is harder than helping quickly. Free food saves lives in emergencies, but over the long term it can hurt local farmers and make communities too dependent on outside help.
  2. Israel’s farming success did not come from technology alone. It came from connecting research, farmers, and markets into one "ecosystem," built out of necessity in a harsh land.
  3. In Jewish tradition, the highest form of tzedakah is helping someone become self-sufficient.

Essential Questions

  1. When does helping actually hurt, and how can we tell the difference?
  2. What does it really mean to "solve" hunger: growing more food, or helping people earn more and build better lives?
  3. Does a country or a person with special knowledge have a responsibility to share it? How do you share in a way that empowers others?
