1948: Unpacking the Narratives

Goals:

• Students will understand the Israeli and Palestinian narratives around 1948.
• Students will understand the different reasons Palestinians fled in 1948 and why Palestinian refugees still exist today.
• Students will understand the concept of narratives and how people can see the same events and interpret their meaning differently.

Essential Questions:

1. What are Israeli and Palestinian narratives around 1948?
2. How can two groups have such different perspectives on one historical event? 
3. How can we know which narratives are true?

Big Ideas:

1. As people we interpret the world in narratives which help us understand the world around us. 
2. Israelis and Palestinians have different narratives of the events of 1948.
3. These narratives are the basis of the conflict which continues to this day.
