The Atlit Prison Break: Rescuing Refugees

In 1945, thousands of Holocaust survivors who fled to the Land of Israel were intercepted by the British and locked behind barbed wire at the Atlit detention camp, a second imprisonment for the “crime” of trying to come home. When the British moved to deport 40 Iraqi Jewish refugees back into danger, the Haganah launched its first-ever prison break, freeing 208 people into the night.
