For nearly a quarter of Israel’s history, one man has dominated its politics. Benjamin "Bibi" Netanyahu has survived wars, scandals, mass protests, and an ongoing corruption trial. He has been voted out, and so far he has always come back.

To his supporters, he is "Mr. Security," the only leader they trust to protect the Jewish state. To his critics, he has deepened Israel’s divisions and weakened its democratic institutions to stay in power. Along the way, Israeli politics stopped being a contest between right and left and became a fight over one man.

This guide helps students understand how Netanyahu rose, why Israelis are so divided over him, and what that divide reveals about the deeper questions facing Israeli society.

Big Ideas

  1. In Israel’s parliamentary system no party has ever won a majority on its own, so every prime minister depends on coalitions. The promises needed to build and keep a coalition shape what a government does as much as the leader’s own convictions.
  2. Benjamin Netanyahu’s long career reflects deep divides in Israeli society over security, the courts, religion and state, and the country’s character. These divides existed before him and are likely to outlast him.
  3. A democracy is tested by whether citizens can disagree fiercely and still accept common rules; it is not dependent on one individual.

Essential Questions

  1. What should matter most when choosing a leader: their record on security, their personal integrity, or their respect for democratic institutions?
  2. Can a democracy stay healthy when one figure dominates its politics for decades, and does the answer depend on whether voters keep choosing him?
  3. How should a society balance the need for unity in a crisis with the need to hold its leaders accountable?
