Goals

  • Students will demonstrate that the Jewish connection to the land of Israel has existed for thousands of years, predating the modern, political movement of Zionism.
  • Students will discuss how Zionism is both an ancient and new movement.
  • Students will examine how Zionism emerged at three different points in Jewish history, each time with a different focus and goal.

Essential Questions

  1. Is Zionism an ancient or new movement? 
  2. Can the problem of antisemitism be solved?
  3. Are the Jews (or Judaism) a nation or a religion?

Big Ideas:

  1. The Jewish connection to the land of Israel has existed for thousands of years, predating the modern, political movement of Zionism.
  2. Zionism emerged at three different points in Jewish history, each time with a different focus and goal. 
  3. A strong focus of Jewish leaders in early-modern times was ending antisemitism.
