In this resource you will find a learning activity to help you and your students process the January 2025 ceasefire and hostage deal between Israel and Hamas. You will find 15 Israeli political cartoons that reflect the diversity of responses to the deal. Along with the cartoons, we've created a learning activity to help you explore these perspectives with your students.
Introduction
Target audience: Grades 7-12
The momentous ceasefire and hostage release has released a wave of emotions amongst Israelis and Jews across the globe including relief, excitement, concern and even anger. This learning activity is designed to help you bring diverse Israeli voices concerning the return of the hostages to your students through the use of political cartoons. The cartoons demonstrate many different ways Israelis are feeling about the agreement. In addition to deepening your students’ understanding of the complexities of Israeli society, by analyzing these political cartoons, they have the opportunity to get a better sense of their own emotions at this time.
Note to Educators
The cartoons included here depict a wide range of political positions. As well, they are the product of a diverse group of Israelis. Included are works by male, female, Ashkenazi, Mizrahi, secular, Religious-Zionist, Ultra-Orthodox, right wing and left wing Israelis. You know your students best. Not every cartoon is right for every group so be mindful of which images you choose to use in your teaching.
