Overcoming Mental Health Challenges

In this explainer video, we do our part to break the stigma associated with mental health disorders. We share stories of overcoming anxiety, depression and other challenges so many of us face. We’re also unpacking why the right type of community can play an enormous part in supporting people suffering from mental health issues. After watching the video, use the prompts below to learn more and get your students thinking.

Unpacked’s Mental Health videos are sponsored by Toby and Michael Kumin.

  1. In the video, Dr. Betsy Stone describes coping mechanisms as ways to drop your emotional temperature. What analogy is she making here? Why does thinking about mental health in this way help to eradicate stigmas?
  2. This video aims to break the stigma of mental illness by exposing the viewer to a variety of people who have, or are struggling with, mental health issues. What is something you can do in your own life to help break the stigma of mental illness
  3. Many of the people interviewed in this video attribute improved mental health to participation and identity development within a community. Do you agree or disagree with the statement that community is more powerful than the individual when it comes to dealing with mental health? Why or why not?
  4. In Judaism, when a person is ill, many pray for a complete recovery with the “Mi Sheberach” prayer. In the text of the prayer, the words include “refuat hanefesh v’refuat haguf”, meaning “healing of the spirit and healing of the body”. It is evident that physical health issues often lead to mental health issues and mental health issues often lead to physical health issues. Should we consider the body and the spirit one and the same when it comes to our health?
  1. Many encourage people to work out and eat healthy in order to improve their physical health. However, it is also just as important to take action to improve one’s mental health on a regular basis, regardless of whether you are suffering from mental health issues or not. Read the following article and choose three coping skills to incorporate into your life. Try to integrate these skills into your daily routine. After a week, report back on how it affected you. Did it add to your week? Did it affect your mood? Did it change your perspective?
  2. In a sharing circle, share a moment from your life in which you struggled with mental health (depression, anxiety, stress etc). How did you deal with it? Was there a coping mechanism or a person that helped you through it?
