In Jerusalem’s alleys and Brooklyn’s streets, they’re seen as relics of the past — black hats, long coats, and a life that looks untouched by time. But the Hasidic world didn’t emerge from tradition. It rose from revolution. In 18th-century Ukraine, amid violence and despair, a mystical rebellion upended the rabbinic elite with joy, dance, and devotion. Preaching spirit over scholarship, Hasidic Jews were mocked, exiled, even jailed. But they endured — and reshaped Judaism as it’s known today, from the margins. And today, their descendants are still dancing.

Big Ideas

  1. Hasidism democratized spirituality, emphasizing joy, personal connection to God, and direct mystical experience.
  2. The rise of Hasidism sparked fierce opposition from the rabbinic elite, revealing deep anxieties over authority, law, and spiritual authenticity.
  3. Though now seen as traditionalist, Hasidic Judaism began as a radical countercultural movement, and it retains aspects of that rebellious spirit today.

Essential Questions

  1. What does it mean to make religion accessible, and who decides who gets access to spiritual leadership and experience?
  2. How do internal conflicts within a religious community shape its identity and evolution?
  3. What does it mean to be a countercultural movement, and can a movement remain revolutionary once it has been mainstreamed?
